Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week Recap…For Mainers

By: Keriann Russell, Fashion Insider, MainelyMara.com

There’s nothing like Fashion Week in New York City – and although I’ve yet to go to any of the live runway shows (yet being the key word!) – it’s as if I can feel the excitement all the way in Portland, Maine!  It feels strange to say, but I was dying to see what designers had in store for Spring 2012…especially since it feels like summer hasn’t quite ended yet and we still have a long winter ahead of us!  Nonetheless, let’s take a look at next season’s biggest trends – the sporty theme and craze for prints are sure to make for a fun springtime in Maine!

Here are 6 of the most dominant (& wearable) trends from NYFW:

Get in the Game

It’s time to show off your team spirit for Spring 2012!  An athletic-gone-chic trend conquered almost every runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.  Anoraks, zip-up hoodies, mesh, track pants & duffel bags were not in short supply among designers including Alexander Wang and Marc by Marc Jacobs…so even if sports weren’t your forte growing up, you’ll want to get your hands on these comfy-cool separates come spring!

Minty Fresh

One of the spring season’s breakout colors was pastel mint green.  Designers loved sherbet hues all across the board, but no color stood out like sea foam green.  Its soft shade makes the color surprisingly easy to wear and it’s a fresh alternative to white.  When the warmer months roll around, you’ll be sure to see this color everywhere!

The Roaring ‘20s

With a strong focus on the bygone era, runways were filled with feminism and romance.  Veteran designer, Ralph Lauren, set the tone by drifting away from his well-known preppy all-American aesthetic, and instead he found inspiration from the newly independent woman of the 1920’s.  Just picture pretty floral dresses, pant suits in silk, satin & chiffon, ostrich feather trim, intricate beading, high-heeled strappy sandals, and vintage brooches.  Spring is a time to glam it up, ladies!

Asymmetrical Hems

There’s no denying that when the warmer temperatures hit, we’re always ready for the simplicity of dress season.  No more layering…just throw on your favorite dress and go!  Fashion Week is never a stranger to cute little dresses, but designers did throw in one little twist – asymmetrical hemlines.  So if there’s one dress you invest in for next season, make it one with an asymmetric hem!  The flowy result is fresh and it’s a great way to show off your new sandals (and pretty pedicure too)!

Flower Power

If you’re a fan of prints, next spring (and summer) is for you!  Patterns in just about every color combination and theme were represented, but it was lush, floral prints that ruled.  Designers went all out and layered botanical prints in head-to-toe looks.  However, since this look may be a little too matchy-matchy for most, just choose one printed piece and style it with neutral separates for a more toned down look.

Brights

Spring’s color story is this: go bold, bright & make your selections somewhat unexpected.  Trust me, come spring you’ll be welcoming all kinds of color in exchange for the dulled grays of winter!  Have fun with vibrant color combos – electric tangerines, lemon yellows, neon greens and cobalt blues.  Who knows, these bright colors may even inspire you to try out color blocking!
