Outfitting Your Autumn Agenda

If you’ve been outside recently (and we sincerely hope that you have), you’ve probably felt more inclined to hit the beach than take a drive up Route One for a little leaf peeping. Regardless of what the thermometer reads, there are loads of fall activities to look forward to and little time to take advantage!
So, while you’ve probably been planning this year’s Halloween outfit since November 1, 2010, chances are you haven’t given much thought to everyday plans like apple picking, a cozy dinner in, a night of music at the gorgeous State, or a fun-filled day at the fair. Not to worry, we’ve spent careful time pondering over just these sorts of outfits and picked what we believe are the perfect pieces for the festivities of fall. Here’s what we’re most looking forward to…
Apple Picking: While we’re not exactly known for cooking up amazing apple pie, we’d never turn down a little autumn apple picking. When the weather’s right, there’s nothing more satisfying than sipping hot cider, picking the perfect pumpkin and heading home with a bag full of gorgeous Maine apples. And for this favorite pastime, we recommend choosing the most current trends in the form of colored cords and furry vests. Pair with your favorite ankle boots and a pair of sleek sunnies for a darling daytime look that’ll have you feeling less city slicker and more country-bumpkin-chic.
Concert at the State Theater: Whether you’ve got tickets to Hanson (yep, they’re comin’ to the State!) or The Flaming Lips, you’ll want to break out the rock star attire with velvet blazers, studded booties and one of fall’s hottest accessories: piles of gold jewelry.
County Fair: What do you get when you throw fried food, a Ferris wheel and downeast farm folk all into one jam-packed arena? An evening full of the most spectacular people watching you can imagine, that’s what. With all those peeping eyes lurking in the crowd, you’ll want to make sure you’re dressed to impress. Keep things country casual in a flowy skirt or dress, paired with your favorite version of this season’s leather boot trend. Balance out the look (and keep toasty-warm) with a leather or military-inspired jacket.
Cozy Dinner In: Although it’s tough for most of us to admit, when the nights get chillier, we find ourselves heading out a little less and cozying up a little more. Whether you’re playing hostess or simply showing up with cheese and wine, spending a Friday night indoors calls for a little something unexpected. Save your jeans for the Farmer’s Market, and instead reach for sleek black pants or a sequined mini. Trust us, you’ll find that your prettiest pieces look effortless when paired with a chunky, cable knit sweater. And finally, forgo your pumps in favor of flats—after all, you don’t want to intimidate your guests or out-do the hostess, as if you even had to try. Wink.
