One of the best ways to boost body confidence, even before you hit the pavement, is by dressing for your own body shape.  You are more likely to feel motivated by putting on fitness clothes that show off your best features and make you feel good.  Celebrity trainer, Tracy Anderson (think Madonna, Gwyn Paltrow and Kelly Ripa to name a few), even came out with a whole workout plan – Metamorphosis – designed around your natural body shape and genes!  Below is what works best for some common shapes…so wear it, rock it and embrace it!

PEAR SHAPE - Pears tend to be smaller on top and bigger on the bottom with larger thighs, a wider waistline and hips, and smaller shoulders

  • Think – JLo
  • Go For – Flared/princess-cut shirts & boot cut pants to create a slimming balance

APPLE/V-SHAPE - You are an apple if your bust and shoulders are larger than your hips and butt.  Usually more athletically built.

  • Think – Jennifer Garner
  • Go For – A-Line tops and ones longer in length help to elongate problem areas.  For bottoms, stick with fitted pants and capris to flatter your athletic legs.

HOURGLASS/CURVY SHAPEHourglass-shaped bodies have their bust and hips equal in measurement and have a very defined waist

  • Think – Scarlett Johansson
  • Go For – For tops, avoid loose, boxy clothes and stick with a V or scoop neck.  For bottoms, go with a fun fitness skort over shorts.

STRAIGHT/LEAN SHAPECharacterized usually by strong, broad shoulders, proportional hips, and the lack of a highly defined waist

  • Think – Kate Hudson
  • Go For - Tops with ruffles, pleats and embroidery, which will create some curves and give you a feminine look.  For bottoms, try low-rise yoga pants with embellished pockets or skinny leg capris.

And if all else fails or you are getting down to your last couple of clean pieces – go with black!  In bottoms and tops, it will give you more length and a slimmer look.
